Hamlet Duplicity Essays - Characters In Hamlet, Prince Hamlet
Hamlet: Duplicity In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, the protagonist exhibits a puzzling, duplicitous nature. Hamlet contradicts himself throughout the play. He endorses both the virtues of acting a role and that of being true to one's self. He further supports both of these conflicting endorsements with his actions. This ambiguity is demonstrated by his alleged madness, for he does behave madly,only to become perfectly calm and rational an instant later. These inconsistencies are related with the internal dilemmas he faces. He struggles with the issue of revenging his father's death_vowing to kill Claudius and then backing out, several times. Upon this point Hamlet stammers through the play. The reason for this teetering is directly related to his inability to form a solid opinion about role playing. This difficulty is not present, however, at the start of the play. In the first act, Hamlet appears to be very straightforward in his actions and inner state. When questioned by Gertrude about his melancholy appearance, Hamlet says, "Seems, madam? Nay it is. I know not `seems.' (1.2.76). This is to say "I am what I appear to be." Later In Act I, Hamlet makes a clear statement about his state when he commits himself to revenge. In this statement the play makes an easy to follow shift. This shift consists of Hamlet giving up the role of a student and mourning son. Hamlet says, "I'll wipe away all trivial fond records, All saws of books, all forms, all pressures past, That youth and observation copied there, And thy commandment all alone shall live Within the book and volume of my brain" (1.5.99-103). Hamlet is declaring that he will be committed to nothing else but the revenge of his father's death. There is no confusion about Hamlet's character. He has said earlier that he is what he appears to be, and there is no reason to doubt it. In the next act,however, Hamlet's status and intentions suddenly, and with out demonstrated reason, become mired in confusion. When Hamlet appears again in act two, it seems that he has lost the conviction that was present earlier. He has yet to take up the part assigned to him by the ghost. He spends the act walking around, reading, talking with Polonius, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, and the players. It is not until the very end of the act that he even mentions vengeance. If he had any of the conviction shown earlier he would have been working on his vengeance. So, instead of playing the part of vengeful son, or dropping the issue entirely, he hangs out in the middle, pretending to be mad. This is shown when he says to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern "I know not- lost all my mirth, forgone all custom of exercise" (2.2.298-299). Later he tells them that he is just feigning madness when he says, "I am but mad north-north-west, when the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw"(2.2.380-381). Admitting so blatantly that he is only feigning madness would imply that he is comfortable with it. He also seems to be generally comfortable with acting This is evidenct when he says, "there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so" (2.2.251-252). Hamlet is saying that behavior shapes reality. It is puzzling that, at this point, Hamlet is comfortable with acting, but not with the role that he said he would play earlier. If he is to play a role, why not the one that his father gave him? When the players come in a short wile later his attitude changes. Hamlet is prompted to vengeance, again, by the moving speech that is given by one of the players. About this speech he says, "Whatis Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba, That he should weep for her? What would he do Had he motive and cue for passion That I have? "(2.2.561-564) In this praise of this players ability to act, Hamlet is saying that, if he were such an actor, he would have killed Claudius by now. This link between vengeance and acting that is present here is what Hamlet struggles with until very near the end. He is then moved to swear that he should kill Claudius when he says, " I should have fatted all the region kites With this slave is off. Bloody, bawdy villain! O, vengeance! Why, what an ass am I?' (2.2.581-585) He makes this big buildup of what he should have done and how he will be revenged and he shoots it down in the next line. This passage is the model of Hamlet's cognitive dissonance. While the term bushman has come to be known as both racist and sexist, it is easily the most recognized term when describing the people living amongst the bush of southern Africa. The San, as they are now known as, are a cluster of indigenous peoples of southern Africa who speak a click language and who have a tradition of living by hunting and gathering (10). In the book The Dobe Ju/`hoansi, Richard B. Lee, an anthropologist from the University of Toronto, takes an interesting and in-depth look into the San life by centering his studies on one specific group. Leeââ¬â¢s focus of study takes place on the border between the countries of Namibia and Botswana in an area called the Dobe. Here there live a tribe of people known as the Dobe Ju/`hoansi. Lee centers on several important issues of the Ju/`hoansi culture and lifestyle throughout the book. He provides a tr emendous amount of information that is broken into twelve chapters that continually draws deeper into the internal thinking of the Ju/`hoansi culture. The method of bringing out this information is delivered first externally with their environment and examples of hunting techniques while moving into deeper issues such as sexuality and religion. Lee also informs the reader on the Ju/`hoansi's kinship, social organization, marriage, as well as conflict, their politics, and social change. Lee begins the case study by providing an interesting lead-in as to the trials and tribulations of locating the Dobe people. I thought that this was an interesting device in order to grasp the reader's attention towards the immense isolation that the Ju/`hoansi remain in. They thought that just because he was the caretaker who picked up the rubbish, he didnt deserve any respect.but they wished theyd have gave him some. After 10 years of cleaning up after people who just didnt care. People who laughed at him for dont his job, picking up their rubbish. Peeling up snotty tissues in the rain in his bright yellow Rain Mack, whilst they laughed at him through the window, he pretended he couldnt see them. After 10 years or this, every day, he has had enough. On his 10 yeah anniversary of being shouted at and just being disregarded, he had decided, this was it. The end, for him anyway. He walked into his stockroom, the one they banged on the door every single time they walked past, every single person. They thought it was funny, but they didnt know that he sat in there crying, through the pain of how they treat him. He didnt even get treated right by the teachers; they shoved him in a room with the boiler. This was it. He walked, slowly, slowly walking. But then he tripped over a mop. He could imagine the laugher of the kids if they had seen that, then theyd run away with his rubbish picker and hide it, so hed have to spend the rest of the day looking for it. He couldnt tell anyone, who would care. He got back up and climbed onto the steel chair, and put the noose round his neck and tied it to one of the pipes. He was rocking the chair, from side to side, slowly, trying to knock it from under his feat, but then, no, he wouldnt let them know that they had got to him. He wouldnt give them that satisfaction. He took the noose off from around his neck, and decided. He was going to make a change. He wouldnt let them get to him anymore not matter how hard they tried. He got off the chair, but then he slipped, he fell, the chair as well. The chair fell toward the boiler. He didnt realise that when he had fallen over the mop it had knocked a valve off the boiler, gas was leaking out, he could smell it. The chair was going for the boiler, he tried to get up but he hit a shelf and it fell off. Cleaning products, bleach, and floor cleaner poured all over him. This chair hit the boiler, and made a spark, then there was no more, he was no moreor was he? BE QUITE CASEY! shouted a nervous Anne. Whats there to worry about? No ones here. We saw it go up in flames, only that freaky caretaker was here, and hes long gone. Casey smirked, Helen and Mark gave out a little giggle, but Anne didnt. Why do we have to do this here? Why are we doing it? Anne asked. Why Not? said Casey Dont be a dick Casey! Anne exclaimed. OK Anne! Its just a Ouji Board, its not like they really work! So why are we doing it Casey? Just shut up! shrieked Helen to Anne, Its just a bit of fun, why dont you go home if youre so bothered? Maybe I will! At this Anne started to make her way back through the ruins of the old high school, what were left of it after it blew up. Loser! muttered Casey, Helen and Mark laughed. OK! This is it. You ready? They sat down in a circle, which the Ouji board in the middle, they all put a finger on the glass and then Casey asked Is there anyone there? The glass slowly moved towards yes, OH MY GOD! Then moved to the side and they saw itthe horribledisfigured, ghost. Helen was there, dead, attached to the mop; the ghost opened its mouth and said, Remember me now?! The ghost was burnt, all over, his skin melted and hanging off! He wasdisgusting. Mark jumped up and ran for the door, he got passed George and then he cackled evil. Mark ran down the corridor, as fast as he could, then he heard a sound behind him, he looked round and George was chasing after him with the floor cleaning machine. He was getting faster, and faster. Mark ran round the corner and bang into someone. ANNE! Mark screamed, I thought youd gone! Mark, what wrong? What was that noise? Theres no time to explain! Hes coming! Who? Anne asked ME! Mark was being lifted up off the floor by a rubbish picker, and then thrown onto the floor. From where he once stood, now stood George. Anne screamed, and turned around, and ran. ANNE WAIT! Mark screamed, but Anne was running, and he tried to, but George stood there with his floor cleaner, Mark tried to run away, he couldnt get up, so he crawled. But he wasnt fast enough. George ran at him with the floor cleaner and ran over him with it. It chopped him in to pieces. He was gone. NOOOOOO! Screamed Anne, she ran back, Why, why are you doing this? You called me! Ill see you soon At this George just disappeared and left the Remains of Mark, and Anne, who lay there crying on the floor. She sat their crying for at least 30 minutes, she couldnt bring herself to move. Then she heard it. ANNE?! It was Casey, he was still alive. She ran down the corridor, CASEY! WHERE ARE YOU? she ran around screaming. She couldnt find him, where was he, then she say him, lying on the floor, by the stairs. CASEY, She ran up to him, he was hurt, badly. Casey are you OK? Anne, I thought youd gone I came back, come on, we have to go, George, hell come for us! I cant move, he beat me with a broom, but I escaped, then I fell down the stairs. You need to stop him, you have to. How Casey, how can I? Im not as strong as him! Why is he doing this? We called him, he came, not hes getting revenge for all the things we did to him But it wasnt just us. Anne said, starting to cry. I know. But were here now. How do I stop him? Asked Anne rising to her feet! The Glass! Then she heard a noise, George came from round the corner with a Lawnmower. He ran up to Casey and lunged at him with it. Anne knew he was dead. So she ran, and ran, and ran. It seemed like she has been running for hours. She knew she had to hide, she couldnt find an exit, and the ones she could has collapsed during the explosion. She saw a small room, and ran it, and locked the door. Then she looked around and realised where she was. She was in Georges room; she saw the Ouji board on the floor, then George, stood there in the corner. He had a pair of tree trimmers in his hand. Anne knew this was it for her. Even if she could reach the door in time, she wouldnt be able to open it. Ready to die Anne? George asked, but the she noticed and thought back to what Casey has told her, the glass THE GLASS! She shouted What? George asked? The Glass, youre not going to kill me, or anyone else! She ran across the room and picked up the glass with the small ball of light in it. No Anne, NO! I WONT GO BACK AGAIN! George screamed. Its too late now She threw the glass on the floor, it smashed and a bright white light flooded the room. Anne was blinded by it. And then it was gone, she was alone in the room. She got up, and slowly unlocked the door and walked out. She walked around the school and looked for an exit. Eventually she found one and walked out. As she walked away, she didnt know what to do first, tell Mark, Casey and Helen parent what had happened, go to the police or just go home and cry, but she knew she has to get away from the school. But as she walked, she heard a low laugh, more like a cackle, coming from inside the school.

Wireless Technology Wireless technology is an industry that has seen much growth and progress in the years following the inception of the internet and cell phones. Our society has progressed to the point to where we can no longer function without this technology. Business, travel, and everyday life now are dependant on wireless technology. Wireless technology is just what its name implies, communicating or computing without wires and phone lines. Wireless technology uses a variety of different devices such as desktop and laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAââ¬â¢s), cell phones, and many others. The major benefit of wireless technology to users is the immediate access it offers to resources. Whether it is providing access to your office, the Internet, your business, or just making a phone call while walking down the street, wireless technology provides millions of users with a degree of flexibility that used to be limited by wires. In general, wireless technology works a lot like wired technology. The user inputs data onto device, connection software translates the data into a format for transmission, and transmission protocols determine the method and route the data into a format for transmission. The method and route the data will take is determined by transmission protocols. Once more, connection software re-translates the data into a format that the new user can perceive. Wireless technology is important to business because it makes communication and integration of e-business easier to achieve. Virtualization brings computing power to the consumer when they need it. Grid technology lets us share and manage collections of resources as if they were a large virtualiz... ...s many wireless technologies as possible. Kanye West Analysis
The song ââ¬Å"So Appalled by Kanye West seems to be one of many songs on Kanyeââ¬â¢s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, album that takes a straight forward attack on the life that Kanye lives but at the same time likes. It seems that the album itself makes many claims about the lifestyle and things that people in the high society do. Beyond that Kanye West is well known for his music being strictly more or less about the internal battle with himself. One that is easily pointed out is ââ¬Å"I'm trying to write my wrongs, But its funny these same wrongs helped me write this song. â⬠(Touch the Sky) I would have to say that through Kanye West career as a song writer heââ¬â¢s is one of the most consistent artist that openly points out and accepts the life he lives as something that isnââ¬â¢t the most holy life to have. As I listen to the song So Appalled I noticed that of all the songs on the album this song seemed to have the most serious or viable beat to go with its pretty direct meaning. As I did the grammar and thesaurus changes to the song I did a lot of adding of the word I changing literally every verse into the first person and of course it sounded more like a story realistically about Kanyeââ¬â¢s life. I think the most important changes to me was the changing of the word ââ¬Å"ridiculousâ⬠to ââ¬Å"unbelievableâ⬠and also changing ââ¬Å"appalledâ⬠to ââ¬Å"amazingâ⬠which in my eyes gave the song kind of a double meaning and also reminded me of another song he did that was actually called amazing done in the album before this 808 Heartbreak which is kind of the other half to this double meaning in the song. With most of the changes I made I feel like I changed the song to better resemble the song ââ¬Å"Amazingâ⬠which is in first person as he talks strictly in one verse about him knowing he is a problem and saying that thatââ¬â¢s something he is fine with and saying that youââ¬â¢ll never be able to take that away from him. So I donââ¬â¢t really believe I changed the song from its meaning just directed it and kind of tried to make it more direct which seems to be more like Kanye. In my eyes the song really talked about the way Kanye west realizes what he does in life really is kind of unbelievable and somewhat unrealistic to the everyday ife of a middle class or even a rich person who is just beginning to see the high life but hasnââ¬â¢t yet really experienced the whole package to think on this level. I believe that jay-Z verse is the most straight forward verse on the track that points out the sinful but amazingly unbelievable life the rappers live. I also kind of took this from Push Tââ¬â¢s verse in the song were he starts out with ââ¬Å"success is what you make itâ⬠ââ¬Å"take it how it comes ââ¬Å" as the verse goes on it seemed to me like he was talking telling a story of his like as if it was something you tell a child. He took the important concept of success and twisted it as if heââ¬â¢s success was good and turned to be someone what of an amazing but odd success that he is happy with but appalled with at the same time. The song really makes you think about how much the most successful rappers think about their lives as a whole. This song has to one of the most, straight forward and most creative songs created by Kanye West. I find itââ¬â¢s really confusing and interesting at the same time that the rappers in the song like the lives they live but at the same timed they call it ridiculous.
